Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Excitement is high in the Diabolical Penthouse for the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Most of the same creative team from the great Rise of the Planet of the Apes returns here and we expect great things. Planet of the Apes (1968)

In the original Planet of the Apes from 1968, Charlton Heston’s character gives a very chilling monologue denouncing humanity and the people of earth to open the film. Is this Heston interjecting his own brand of social commentary? We can’t say, but it certainly speaks to it’s era and is full of passion. It’s interesting to watch Heston’s character develop throughout the film as he goes from denouncing humanity to being enraged and saddened by it’s destruction during the film’s final scene. Rod Serling wrote one of cinema’s great twist endings here and Heston delivered on it like only he could. Check the links below for Heston’s epic opening monologue to the film as well as his performance during it’s climatic, twist finish. If you haven’t had the chance to watch this movie, we highly recommend it. It truly is one of the great Sci-Fi films of this last century.

2001: A Space Odyssey – The Dawn of Man

Kubrick had a talent for framing a shot and building upon his message. The opening scene to 2001: A Space Odyssey is no different as we watch a group of Apes eventually figure out how to use tools to cause destruction… hence “The Dawn of Man.” The visual is lasting and Kubrick’s inclusion of Richard Strauss’ classic “Also Sprach Zarathustra” combines to make this opening sequence unforgettable.
