Bernard Herrmann
Names like Zimmerman, Elfman and Williams are common place on the minds of all who love the immersion of cinema, but what about Hermann? Bernard Herrmann likely scared your Mom and your Dad out of their young minds and will likely cause you to lose some sleep as well- whether teaming up with Orson Welles or later being one half of cinema’s most suspenseful duos with Alfred Hitchcock, Hermann knew his way around a suspenseful score. When they teamed up for Hitchcock’s Psycho, Herrmann took an approach never done before by only using stringed instruments producing the screeching sound of Norman Bates’ psychotic mind and (with the possible exception of Jaws) cinema’s most notable score ever. Long after his death in the mid 70s, directors such as Tarentino still embrace his work (Kill Bill). We raise our glass to Academy Award winner Bernard Herrmann. Cheers!

Alfred Hitchcock Presents
Alfred Hitchcock is well known for his masterful use of suspense within his storytelling, however, just as impressive, and often overlooked, is his ingenious business mind. The Alfred Hitchcock Presents television series presents a prime example of how Hitchcock, much like Walt Disney, understood the changing landscape of 1950’s Hollywood and fully embraced the new medium of television. Doing so made him, and more importantly his brand, a household name. To this day, his silhouette is easily the most recognizable and iconic image within Hollywood. It took a bold and brilliant mind to go against the Hollywood herd and take a chance on television. Clearly, Mr. Hitchcock was well ahead of his time in all aspects of entertainment. We salute his genius.

This Week’s Dope
Chuck’s Dope
Another week and another mention of CW’s Flash tv show. I never thought a show on the CW network could possibly speak to me, but clearly those involved with this show understand not only the Flash mythos but good storytelling as well. With season two’s premiere episode, my mind was delightfully treated to a live action version of the Atom Smasher! Talk about a somewhat random and unexpected character. I really love how this show is fleshing out the DC Universe… culminate that with an introduction to the Multiverse and we have the makings for a comic book fan’s dream. Something tells me this probably isn’t the last time I mention this show. If you’re not watching, I highly recommend giving it a go.
Curtis’ Dope
GI Joburg: From the tip of the dark continent to the west coast of the United States the adventures of GiJoe will be discussed and bantered and pondered by some of the sharpest minds in the genre. If you are one of those minds, enjoy the company of South Africa’s boldest podcast GiJoburg w/ yours truly “Special Missions Cujo” as we probe the Pyramid of Darkness. Listen to the show here.
ZNation’s “Doc”: Some shows are frankly better than they have any business being really- and whether the SYFY channel is dropping sharknados or Z-weed they have my attention. If you’re a fan of ZNation keep an eye out for Doc vs Sniper in episode 2 of this current season. As the squads “free thinker” he is a fan favorite and he flexes some dynamic versatility in this scene.
Long Beach Cinematheque: if we are in your ears and you live in proximity keep your eyes open for the experience that is outdoor movies w/ all your new friends at the Sunnyside Cemetery. Maybe you’ll see Kubrick’s The Shining and then turn it over quixotically in your mind for several weeks but regardless a proper good time and a chill venue for denizens of Long Beach. Check them out here.
