– Show Notes –

The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter’s The Thing has long been a regular visitor to the Diabolical Penthouse. Whether you’re talking the masterful score, compelling dialogue, or just simply Kurt Russell’s amazing beard, The Thing has multiple layers worthy for discussion and provides perfect fodder for our diabolical minds. Perhaps the aspect to John Carpenter’s 1982 masterpiece we most enjoy is the subtle, and in some cases, not so subtle social commentary weaved into this snow capped landscape. Does the Thing represent the secrets we keep? When our secrets leak, do we pretty much feel (and look) like The Thing on the inside? Should we keep secrets? It’s likely each viewer will walk away with their own unique answers to these questions, which makes The Thing every bit a Sci-Fi power house in our book. It’s high time you give this Carpenter classic another viewing and revel in the secrets it contains. Enjoy!

John Carpenter

Through the late 70’s and most of the 80’s, one voice in Sci-Fi still echoes in our minds this session. John Carpenter is a force to be reckoned with on sheer versatility alone. His synth scores crafting a genre of music, but it’s likely his voice and the subversive nature of his commentary that begins to resonate the longer life’s shadow grows. An undeniable presence in the Diabolical Penthouse, we decided to project our thoughts on his work as our world of secrets begin to dissolve.

This Week’s Dope

Chuck’s Dope

While listening to the Disney Project Podcast, my mind was stimulated during a retrospective, of sorts, on the classic Disneyland Peoplemover attraction and it’s journey thru the amazing world of Tron. I remember like it was yesterday my first foray into this digital frontier. Picture larger than life light cycles racing by you as you speed down the Grid trying mercifully to evade the perils presented by the dreaded MCP (Master Control Program). For a Tron fanatic, it was pure bliss and I remember being quite disappointed when the park decided to close the attraction back in 1995. Though the effects are woefully outdated by today’s standards, as a kid, it truly felt like you were on the Grid for those brief moments.  I want to thank the guys at the Disney Project Podcast for being the gateway to my nostalgic journey back to this favorite attraction from my youth. If you never had the opportunity to experience this journey into the world of Tron yourself, check out the video here (the fun begins around the 5 minute mark).
