Ex Machina (2015)
It feels like Ex Machina and Mad Max: Fury Road will be linked in time as maybe the best 1, 2 punch in Sci-Fi. Released on successive weekends, Fury Road is two hours of mayhem, while, Ex Machina serves as a think piece that compliments the chaos perfectly. Subtle, immersive, and sinister, Alex Garland’s Ex Machina is a must see and is guaranteed to stimulate your mind for years to come. Check out the links below for more on this amazing film and it’s talented director. If there’s one thing we’re sure of, this won’t be the last time Ex Machina or Alex Garland make their way into the Penthouse.

BlueBook Search Engine (Ex Machina)
Though some will likely assume Bluebook (the search engine software in Ex Machina) is a nod to Facebook, in actuality, Alex Garland included the name as tribute to Ludwig Wittgenstein, a famous philosopher who specialized in logic and language. The Blue & Brown books represent a collection of Wittgenstein’s lectures given to students at the University of Cambridge during the early 30’s; even today, The Blue Book is widely considered a turning point in the philosophy of language. Team Diabolical loves thoughtful easter eggs and, as it turns out, Ex Machina is chalk full of them. Enjoy some knowledge with the links below and look out for the special “code” easter egg we mentioned during the session.

This Week’s Dope
Chuck’s Dope
Watchmen – There are a few comic stories universally praised as being immaculate; Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns is certainly one, another would be Alan Moore’s epic Watchmen. This is a story arc I’ve read a few times over the years and it seems to keep getting better with age. The story hints at what it means to truly be a hero and suggests that good and evil aren’t always so black and white. If you’re one of the few who have yet to read this opus, I highly suggest you give it a go. It’ll certainly shake loose the dope in you as it presents storytelling at it’s finest.

Mad Max: Fury Road – If you’re reading these words, you are likely a Sci-Fi fan and racing down the glorious dystopia of the Fury Road, one road warrior who can’t be ignored is the flame throwing, electric guitar playing, war calling “Doof Warrior.” Is he the new face of madness in pop culture? Oh what a lovely movie.
